Moscow court rules US journalist Evan Gershkovich must stay in jail until late August – Daily Press

0

MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court on Thursday ruled that Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich must remain in jail on espionage charges until at least late August, rejecting the American journalist’s appeal to be released.

The 31-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested in late March while on a reporting trip. A Moscow court ruled last month to keep him in custody until Aug. 30, but his lawyers had challenged the decision.

Gershkovich, wearing a black T-shirt and light blue jeans, looked tense and paced inside a glass defendant’s cage while waiting for the hearing to begin at the Moscow City Court. Then other journalists in the courtroom were asked to leave and the proceedings took place behind closed doors.

The ruling was broadcast to reporters, who watched it on two large TV screens in a separate room in the courthouse.

While waiting for the judge, Gershkovich smiled and chatted to his parents, who were present. U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy also attended.

“Evan continued to show remarkable strength and resiliency in these very difficult circumstances,” she told reporters afterward.

Tracy said she was “extremely disappointed” by the ruling, reiterating that Gershkovich was “an innocent journalist” and Russia’s charges against him were baseless.

“Such hostage diplomacy is unacceptable, and we call on the Russian Federation to release him,” she said.

Gershkovich and his employer have denied the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

His arrest in the city of Yekaterinburg rattled journalists in Russia, where authorities have not detailed what, if any, evidence they have to support the espionage charges.

Gershkovich is being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, which is notorious for its harsh conditions. Tracy said the U.S. Embassy was denied consular access to Gershkovich on three occasions since she last visited him in jail in April.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters the ministry is considering another visit request from the embassy.

Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips in soaring U.S.-Russian tensions over the Kremlin’s military operation in Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.

Ryabkov has cautioned, however, that the possibility of a swap in Gershkovich’s case “could only be considered after a court delivers its verdict.” Prominent lawyers who worked on espionage cases told The Associated Press that the investigation alone could take up to 18 months.

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. Daniloff was released without charge 20 days later in a swap for an employee of the Soviet Union’s U.N. mission who was arrested by the FBI, also on spying charges.

In rowdy scene, House censures Rep. Adam Schiff over Trump-Russia investigations – Daily Press

0

By MARY CLARE JALONICK (Associated Press)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House voted Wednesday to censure California Rep. Adam Schiff for comments he made several years ago about investigations into Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, rebuking the Democrat and frequent critic of the former president along party lines.

Schiff becomes the 25th House lawmaker to be censured. He was defiant ahead of the vote, saying he will wear the formal disapproval as a “badge of honor” and charging his GOP colleagues of doing the former president’s bidding.

“I will not yield,” Schiff, who is running for the Senate in his home state, said during debate over the measure. “Not one inch.”

When it was time for Schiff to come to the front of the chamber to be formally censured, immediately after the vote, the normally solemn ceremony turned into more of a celebratory atmosphere. Dozens of Democrats crowded to the front, clapping and cheering for Schiff and patting him on the back. They chanted “No!,” “Shame!” and “Adam! Adam!”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., read the resolution out loud, as is tradition after a censure. But he only read part of the document before leaving the chamber as Democrats heckled and interrupted him.

“Censure all of us,” one Democrat yelled.

Schiff, the former Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the lead prosecutor in Trump’s first impeachment trial, has long been a top Republican political target. Soon after taking back the majority this year, Republicans blocked him from sitting on the intelligence panel.

More than 20 Republicans voted with Democrats last week to block the censure resolution, but they changed their votes this week after the measure’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, removed a provision that could have fined Schiff $16 million if the House Ethics Committee determined he lied. Several of the Republicans who voted to block the resolution last week said they opposed fining a member of Congress in that manner.

The final vote on Wednesday was 213-209 along party lines, with a handful of members voting present.

The revised resolution says Schiff held positions of power during Trump’s presidency and “abused this trust by saying there was evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.” Schiff was one of the most outspoken critics of the former president as both the Justice Department and the Republican-led House launched investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia in 2017. Both investigations concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 presidential election but neither found evidence of a criminal conspiracy.

“Representative Schiff purposely deceived his Committee, Congress, and the American people,” the resolution said.

The House has only censured two other lawmakers in the last 20 years. Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona was censured in 2021 for tweeting an animated video that depicted him striking Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., with a sword. Former Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York was censured in 2010 for serious financial and campaign misconduct.

The censure itself carries no practical effect, except to provide a historic footnote that marks a lawmaker’s career. But the GOP resolution would also launch an ethics investigation into Schiff’s conduct.

While Schiff did not initiate the 2017 congressional investigation into Trump’s Russia ties — then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, a Republican who later became one of Trump’s most ardent defenders, started it — Republicans arguing in favor of his censure Wednesday blamed him for what they said was the fallout of that probe, and of the separate investigation started that same year by Trump’s own Justice Department.

Luna said that Schiff’s comments that there was evidence against Trump “ripped apart American families across the country” and that he was “permanently destroying family relationships.” Several blamed him for the more than $30 million spent by then-special counsel Robert Mueller, who led the Justice Department probe.

Schiff said the censure resolution “would accuse me of omnipotence, the leader of some a vast Deep State conspiracy, and of course, it is nonsense.”

Democrats aggressively defended their colleague. Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, who led Trump’s second impeachment, called the effort an “embarrassing revenge tour on behalf of Donald Trump.”

Mueller, who led the two-year Justice Department investigation, determined that Russia intervened on the campaign’s behalf and that Trump’s campaign welcomed the help. But Mueller’s team did not find that the campaign conspired to sway the election, and the Justice Department did not recommend any criminal charges.

The House intelligence committee probe launched by Nunes similarly found that Russia intervened in the election but that there was no evidence of a criminal conspiracy. Schiff was the top Democrat on the panel at the time.

Schiff said last week that the censure resolution was “red meat” that McCarthy was throwing to his conference amid squabbles over government spending. Republicans are trying to show their fealty to Trump, Schiff said.

He said he warned the country during impeachment proceedings three years ago that Trump “would go on to do worse. And of course he did worse in the form of a violent attack on the Capitol.”

After Democrats won the House majority in 2018, the House impeached Trump for abuse of power after he threatened to withhold military aid to Ukraine and urged the country’s president to investigate then-candidate Joe Biden. Schiff was the lead House prosecutor making the case for conviction to the Senate, arguing repeatedly that “right matters.” The Republican-led chamber ultimately acquitted him.

Trump was impeached a second time a year later, after he had left office, for his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. The Senate again acquitted Trump.

In the censure resolution against Schiff, Luna also cited a report released in May from special counsel John Durham that found that the FBI rushed into its investigation of Trump’s campaign and relied too much on raw and unconfirmed intelligence.

Durham — who testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday — said investigators repeatedly relied on “confirmation bias,” ignoring or rationalizing away evidence that undercut their premise of a Trump-Russia conspiracy as they pushed the probe forward. But he did not allege that political bias or partisanship were guiding factors for the FBI’s actions.

In the hours before the vote, Schiff’s campaign sent out a fundraising email that said Luna had introduced “yet ANOTHER resolution to censure me.”

“The vote and debate will happen imminently,” the email read, asking recipients to donate to help him fight back. “Once more, I have to be on the House floor to listen as MAGA Republicans push false and defamatory lies about me.”

Democrats argued that the House censure resolution is an effort to distract from Trump’s recent indictment on federal charges of hoarding classified documents — several of which dealt with sensitive national security matters — and attempting to conceal them. House Republicans, most of whom are loyal to Trump, say the indictment is more evidence that the government is conspiring against the former president.

“This is not a serious resolution,” said Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., but political theater to “distract from Donald Trump’s history of transgressions and now indictments.”

Response times should be a non-issue

I write regarding inaccuracies in Ms. Lisa Ownby’s commentary on May 31, specifically her statements about voluntary fire department response times and homeowner insurance rates.

I have lived in the Croaker area of James City County for over 40 years, serving as sheriff of Williamsburg and James City County for 20 of those years. During this time, I have come to know many of the people staffing Station 1 in Toano. I find them to be dedicated, well-trained fire and rescue personnel. No complaints regarding slow or inadequate response times have ever come to my attention. According to the county website, JCC fire stations provide support within six minutes, well within the 14-minute standard set by NFPA 1720 (National Fire Protection Association), Table 4.3.2, Minimum Requirements for Volunteer Fire Department Response Capabilities.

Regarding Ms. Ownby’s statement about higher homeowner insurance rates for county residents due to inadequate fire response times, I spoke with my local insurance agent who said she had never heard anything like that. She said the rates vary, depending on proximity to a fire station or to a fire hydrant, or both, but not the fire station response time.

Someone running for public office should be careful about making inaccurate and uneducated statements.

How do we repair damages from slavery?

I appreciate Terri Osborne’s response to Laura D. Hill’s prior op-ed about racial reparations. There are many ways to make reparations. When we made reparations to 120,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned in concentrations during WWII, we made reparation payments of $20,000 each — no questions asked. And the American people paid the money because our elected officials did this in our name. So there is precedent for payments to individuals and their descendants.

While no living person has a direct history of owning enslaved humans, white Americans have benefited. Fifty percent of the United States’ gross national product in 1850 was rooted in slavery’s cheap production of cotton; the cotton manufacturing industries depended on it and shipping that transported it to England. The inherited wealth of many of us today can be traced to those sources.

In addition, Social Security benefits, GI Bill education and home loans that allowed many 20th century white families to attain middle class status were generally not available to Black people following WWII, and federal loan programs that red-lined neighborhoods with any Black residents crippled home ownership for many; these factors impacting living people today contribute to white folks having 10 times as much wealth as our Black neighbors.

Let’s keep talking about creative ways to repair the damages we citizens, through our government, have done on our fellow Americans.

Don’t try to fix what’s not broken

If, indeed, Williamsburg/James City County has an “outstanding school division” per Mayor Doug Pons, why has City Council voted to authorize a study regarding the feasibility of implementing an independent Williamsburg school division?

Williamsburg taxpayers should ask 1.) What precipitated this sudden concern? 2.) Who is going to do this “study?” and 3.) How much is this this going to cost the city’s taxpayers?

A simple call to West Point or Poquoson should give Council an idea of what running an independent school division will cost.

Is there an ulterior motive for approving this study or does Council just not have enough to do?

If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it!

Run with your dog using these hands-free leashes – Daily Press

Which hands-free leash is best?

When you go running with your dog, you may find that a hands-free leash makes it easier to concentrate on your form while keeping your canine companion safe and secure. They’re also great for people who can’t hold standard leashes due to disabilities or medical issues.

If you’re looking for a strong and easily adjustable leash, the Tuff Mutt Hands-Free Dog Leash is a top choice.

What to know before you buy a hands-free leash

Types of hands-free leash

You can find three types of hands-free leash designs: waist, crossbody and adjustable versions.

  • Waist: These leashes attach to belts that secure around your waist. They’re secure and comfortable to wear, making them the most popular hands-free dog leashes. While they’re size-adjustable, they still won’t fit every dog parent, so you need to check the measurements.
  • Crossbody: Hands-free crossbody leashes have straps that sit across the body from the shoulder on one side to the waist on the other. They’re quick and easy to put on and take off, plus you can use them as a standard leash when needed.
  • Adjustable: If you’re not sure whether to buy a crossbody leash or one with a waist belt, consider an adjustable version you can wear either way. Most of these also allow you to use them as standard leashes

Durability

It’s extremely important that hands-free leashes are durable, especially if you’re running. If parts break, your dog could get loose and get in trouble.

  • Belt and leash: The belt and leash should use a tough material that stays durable, such as nylon webbing.
  • Hardware: The metal clips and other hardware should be tough enough to hold up under pressure or sudden sharp pulling.
  • Stitching: Ideally, look for leashes with reinforced stitching, especially in places where the hardware attaches to the belt or leash.

Shock-absorbing properties

Some hands-free leashes have shock-absorbing properties to keep you and your dog from getting jerked around. Leashes with a bungee section help absorb shock. These stay contracted while the leash is loose, but the bungee portion stretches as the leash gets tight.

What to look for in a quality hands-free leash

Dual handles

Even if your dog is attached to you hands-free, you may occasionally need to hold the leash to cross roads or when around other dogs. Leashes with dual handles give you more control. Look for ones that have a handle near the top and another at the lower end of the leash.

Reflective

Leashes with reflective strips or stitching are perfect for increasing your visibility when out and about in low light.

Adjustable waist

You should be able to adjust the waist to accommodate your size for a snug fit. Look for one that will be tight enough on your waist without making you feel uncomfortable.

How much you can expect to spend on hands-free leash

Most cost between $15 to $30, but you can find a handful of high-end versions for as much as $50.

Hands-free leash FAQ

Are hands-free leashes good for dogs that pull?

A. If your dog pulls on the leash a lot, using a hands-free leash isn’t a good idea. Even if your dog isn’t particularly big or heavy, the fact the leash is secured around your waist or across your body means it can injure your back. What’s more, big dogs can pull you over if they catch you off guard. If you want to walk your dog on a hands-free leash, it’s best to teach it to walk to heel first.

Should dogs run in a collar or harness?

A. If you’re planning to use a hands-free dog leash for running, make sure your dog runs in a harness rather than a collar. If you use a collar and stop quickly or your dog pulls suddenly at something, the sudden pressure can hurt the neck or damage the trachea. Choose a well-padded harness for long runs to avoid chafing.

Our take: Durable and reliable, this hands-free leash is a great choice for running or walking.

What we like: The bungee portion of the leash absorbs shock, while the dual handles are great for close control when you need it. There’s reflective stitching on the leash and waist strap for increased visibility. The gliding clip helps keep you from getting tangled up.

What we dislike: Some people find the leash a little short — especially for dogs who like to stay a few steps ahead of you.

Our take: This versatile leash has two attachment points and comes in neon yellow and bright orange for good visibility.

What we like: Not only are the dual handles great for close control, but they’re padded for your comfort. Thanks to the bungee attachment, this leash absorbs shock if your dog pulls or you stop too quickly for your dog.

What we dislike: The clip doesn’t glide, which can be annoying if your dog moves from one side to the other.

These cricket gloves offer both flexibility and protection – Daily Press

0

Which cricket batting gloves are best?

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, and youngsters around the globe continue to don equipment and get in the game. For those playing, batting gloves are an important accessory that is vital to both success and safety on the pitch.

Cricket batting gloves are designed to balance flexibility and protection, offering enough padding to prevent injury when the ball makes contact but also proper flexibility to play effectively.

Our guide will take a look at this balance and other considerations in choosing the right cricket batting gloves. We’re also making several product recommendations at the end, including our favorite, SG Test White Cricket Batting Gloves, which are durable and comfortable and designed by a trusted brand.

What to know before you buy cricket batting gloves

Game type

For long, three- or five-day matches, protection is important, as a batter may have to defend for longer periods. If you’ll often be playing in this format, you’ll want added protection. For short matches, like T20 play, defensive work may be limited, and you’ll likely want a glove that features more maneuverability than cumbersome padding.

Skill level

It’s important to choose a glove that matches the skill of those playing around you. Protection is important as the ball is likely to make contact with your hands. However, if you’re playing with bowlers who aren’t as fast and strong, you may not need extra padding, which tends to be heavier and makes it harder to grip the bat.

Right vs. left

Cricket batting gloves are either right- or left-handed in construction. That’s because the thumb of your front, leading hand will be more exposed when holding a bat. That glove, and the thumb in particular, will have more padding than the other glove to keep you safe when a ball comes your way.

What to look for in quality cricket batting gloves

Padding

Protection comes in different forms, especially when it’s trying to maximize flexibility. Some options feature sectional padding on the fingers, where the padding is broken near the joints to allow you to grip and bend easily. Other gloves may come pre-curved; these take time getting used to, but the design is effective for batting where you don’t need to extend your fingers.

Color

While in international competition, all gloves must be white. For casual league play, you may be able to play with a color of your choosing. Color won’t affect play, but it can add a bit of personality to your game.

Material

The most popular choice for cricket batting gloves are those made of leather, as the material is durable and protective. Some may be somewhat porous, too, allowing more breathability.

An alternative is polyurethane, which is a synthetic leather that comes at a lower price without sacrificing toughness. However, this material typically isn’t as airy. Some gloves may have a cotton liner within for sweat absorption and added comfort.

How much you can expect to spend on cricket batting gloves

A wide range of quality cricket batting gloves will cost between $30 and $55, with your choice of color and material. For frequent, intense players, higher-end gloves will run up to $100.

Cricket batting gloves FAQ

Q. How should I maintain my batting gloves?

A. It’s advised to wear thin gloves underneath your batting gloves to avoid perspiration and moisture attacking the material, as this can cause it to wear down over time. Before storing gloves, dry them completely. In the off-season, wrap them in a towel and stow them away in a cool, dry place.

Q. How many batting gloves should I own?

A. If you are able to, it’s worth investing in a second pair of gloves. It will allow you to alternate gloves to let a pair take a day off, especially if you’re playing frequently and the gloves are taking a beating. You may want a second pair to be slightly different than your first if you’re playing different types of cricket.

Get rid of weeds and prepare your garden’s soil with a high-quality hoe – Daily Press

0

Best garden hoes of 2023

While plenty of modern gardening tools can help prepare your garden for planting, you shouldn’t overlook the value of traditional tools. The garden hoe dates back to ancient Egypt, but it’s still highly effective for removing weeds and breaking up the soil before planting.

There are several types of hoes, though, so choosing the right size and shape can make all the difference in how well a garden hoe performs.  But no matter what type of garden you have, one of these premium garden hoes can help get your soil ready for planting in no time.

Types of garden hoes

While all garden hoes are similar, they come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on the tasks you plan to use them for, one type may be better than another.

  • Paddle hoes: Paddle hoes are the most common style and have a rectangular paddle angled 90 degrees from the handle. They work well for removing weeds at the roots and breaking up dirt to ready it for planting.
  • Stirrup hoes: A stirrup hoe has a paddle that resembles the stirrup on a saddle and is designed to be used in a back-and-forth motion. It works well for scooping out stubborn weeds.
  • Dutch hoes: A Dutch hoe has a flat triangle blade angled 90 degrees from the handle. Its pointy edge can help dig out tough weeds or reach into tighter areas of your garden.
  • Prong hoes: Prong hoes usually have a paddle hoe on one side and a forked blade on the other. They are especially effective for weeding but also let you move soil precisely around growing plants.

Garden hoe materials

If you want your garden hoe to be as durable as possible, pay attention to its material.

Budget-friendly hoes often have welded steel blades, with a joint that can eventually wear out. Stainless steel hoes are rust- and corrosion-resistant and are a single piece without any welding that can create weak spots. However, they can be somewhat soft and may lose their shape over time.

The highest quality garden hoes typically have tempered steel blades, which are thicker and sturdier than stainless steel hoes. However, while they are corrosion-resistant, they can rust over time.

It’s also important to consider a garden hoe’s handle material. Most are made of wood, which offers excellent shock absorption. Unfortunately, wooden handles can rot and split over time, but you can replace a wooden handle fairly easily. Fiberglass handles also provide effective shock absorption and are not prone to mold or rot.  But they are more difficult and expensive to replace than wood handles.

Get rid of weeds and prepare your garden’s soil with a high-quality hoe – Daily Press

Tropical Storm Bret grows stronger as eastern Caribbean islands prepare for heavy flooding – Daily Press

0

By DÁNICA COTO (Associated Press)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Bret grew stronger on Wednesday as it took aim at islands in the eastern Caribbean that braced for torrential rainfall, landslides and flooding.

Bret had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) on Wednesday night and was moving westward across the Atlantic Ocean at 16 mph (26 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The storm was located some 290 miles (465 kilometers) east of Barbados and is expected to grow stronger before lashing several eastern Caribbean islands late Thursday at near hurricane strength. Tropical storm warnings were issued for St. Lucia, Dominica and the French Caribbean island of Martinique as officials in the region urged people to prepare for Bret. A tropical storm watch was in effect for Barbados.

“We all know the uncertainty with forecasting intensity, movement and impact of weather systems,” said Fitzroy Pascal at Dominica’s office of disaster management.

A special aircraft dispatched to investigate the storm on Wednesday found that Bret had grown a bit bigger, with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 105 miles (165 kilometers) from its center, according to forecasters. Officials said it was too soon to know where Bret’s center would pass through, but they warned that up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain were forecast from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe south to Grenada and Barbados.

The government of Guadeloupe warned that inclement weather would start Thursday morning and continue until late Friday, with waves of up to 11 feet (3.5 meters).

“Be careful!” officials warned in a statement.

Antigua-based regional airline LIAT and interCaribbean Airways said the storm would disrupt several of its flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Bret is expected to weaken after it enters the eastern Caribbean Sea and is forecast to dissipate by Saturday.

The storm formed Monday — an unusually early and aggressive start to the Atlantic hurricane season that began on June 1. A tropical disturbance with an 80% chance of cyclone formation is trailing Bret. No June on record has had two storms form in the tropical Atlantic, according to meteorologist Philip Klotzbach at Colorado State University.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast 12 to 17 named storms for this year’s hurricane season. It said between five and nine of those storms could become hurricanes, including up to four major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.
