Pop star Kesha and producer Dr. Luke settle longstanding legal battle over rape, defamation claims – Daily Press

By JENNIFER PELTZ (Associated Press)

NEW YORK (AP) — Pop star Kesha and producer Dr. Luke have settled nearly a decade of suits and countersuits over her accusation that he drugged and raped her and his claim that she made it up and defamed him, they announced Thursday, with the singer saying that “only God knows what happened that night.”

Dr. Luke, meanwhile, said he was “absolutely certain that nothing happened. I never drugged or assaulted her.”

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, as both she and he revealed on Instagram that they had agreed to “a resolution” of the case and to a statement from each of them. Messages seeking comment were sent to their attorneys.

“I cannot recount everything that happened,” Kesha wrote, adding that she wishes “nothing but peace to all parties involved.”

Dr. Luke, in turn, said he wished her well and wanted “to put this difficult matter behind me” after years of fighting to clear his name.

The deal averts a trial that had been scheduled for this summer over allegations that became a #MeToo cause for Kesha’s supporters and came to involve a lineup of music industry luminaries. Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Adam Levine and Taio Cruz are among those who gave testimony or sworn statements related to the case.

At the same time, the case raised important legal questions about fame and defamation. The stakes were seen as high enough that media outlets weighed in about pretrial rulings that they worried could help powerful people suppress unflattering reporting.

The court clash between the multiplatinum-selling singer and the Grammy-nominated producer has been playing out since 2014 and looming over both of their careers.

The Associated Press does not generally name people who report being sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Kesha has done.

The singer made her name — originally styled Ke$ha — with a series of swaggering, just-try-to-stop-me party anthems, beginning with 2009’s “TiK ToK.” Those early hits were produced by Dr. Luke, who founded the record label that signed a Nashville unknown named Kesha Rose Sebert at age 18.

Born Lukasz Gottwald, he has produced chart-toppers for Perry, Lavigne, Flo Rida and more. Besides notching multiple Grammy nominations, Dr. Luke has repeatedly won pop songwriter of the year awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Kesha sued him in 2014, alleging he drugged and raped her nine years earlier and psychologically tormented her throughout their working relationship. She said he harangued her about her weight, denigrated her voice and lorded his power over her career.

“The abuse I suffered from Luke was a decade long, every day, every moment of every day,” she said during sworn questioning in 2017. According to Kesha, the ordeal sparked a flare-up of an eating disorder that led to her spending two months in a rehabilitation clinic in 2014.

Dr. Luke, who has not been charged with any crimes, responded by suing Kesha. He has asserted that she made “completely untrue and deeply hurtful” claims to tarnish him and get out of her record contract.

“Any reasonable person will not believe her,” he said when questioned under oath in 2017.

His attorneys have noted that Kesha herself said he “never made sexual advances at me” during sworn questioning in a separate lawsuit in 2011. She has since said she was “not entirely transparent” in those 2011 statements because she was terrified of Dr. Luke and felt compelled to protect him.

Kesha went five years without releasing an album during the standoff, saying she could not work with a “monster” but couldn’t get away from him because she was under contract with his label. His lawyers and the label’s attorneys maintained that she did not have to work with him personally.

She eventually returned with 2017’s “Rainbow” and two subsequent albums, all with other producers. Her most recent album, “Gag Order,” came out in May.

Dr. Luke’s career also took a hit after she went public with her allegations. He has said various artists, particularly female ones, eschewed “working with someone who’s called a rapist.”

But under the name Tyson Trax, he made it back to the top of the charts in 2020 with Doja Cat’s “Say So,” garnering his first Grammy nomination since 2014. By this year, he was ASCAP’s pop songwriter of the year once again.

Along the way, Kesha’s sexual abuse-related claims were dismissed because of time limits and other legal issues, without any findings about the merits of the allegations themselves. But she countersued Dr. Luke under a New York law against bringing frivolous suits to try to intimidate critics into silence; New York’s highest court recently ruled that she could pursue those claims.

The top court, which New York calls the Court of Appeals, also declared that Dr. Luke is a “public figure” in the eyes of the law. That’s significant because the legal requirements for proving defamation are tougher for public figures than for everyday people.

Lower courts had said the producer wasn’t a public figure. Over a dozen media outlets and organizations got involved in the case to argue that those earlier rulings could end up helping famous people squash free speech and reporting on sexual abuse allegations.

Earlier in the case, Kesha was ordered to pay Dr. Luke more than $373,000 in interest on royalties she paid him years late.

New Triple-A players help Tides split doubleheader at Nashville – Daily Press

A night after clinching an International League playoff berth, the Norfolk Tides split a doubleheader with the Nashville Sounds in Tennessee.

The Tides (47-24) won 3-0 in Thursday’s Game 2 after losing 7-1 in the opener to the Sounds (38-33).

Justin Armbruester, a 24-year-old right-hander, made an outstanding Triple-A pitching debut in Game 2, holding Nashville to two hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings. Joey Krehbiel and another pitcher making his Triple-A debut, Wandisson Charles, threw an inning apiece to complete the shutout.

Cesar Prieto — who, like Armbruester and Charles, recently was promoted from Double-A Bowie — hit a single that brought home Connor Norby and Heston Kjerstad in Game 2’s first inning. Prieto then slugged a third-inning homer.

In Game 1, Norfolk could have been experiencing a figurative hangover from the champagne-soaked party of the previous night, when the Tides ensured the IL’s first-half championship.

Winner Thomas Pannone (3-1) struck out 10 and held the Tides to five hits in 6 2/3 innings. One of those was a homer to right-center in the fourth by Kjerstad. Alex Claudio got the final out.

Keston Hiura and Mike Brosseau hit two-run homers in the first and fourth innings, respectively, for Nashville, the Milwaukee Brewers’ top affiliate. Skye Bolt was 3 for 4 and scored twice.

The Tides’ Daz Cameron was 2 for 2, but his teammates combined for just three hits.

Norfolk starter Drew Rom (5-5) took the loss, giving up six earned runs and eight hits despite eight strikeouts in five innings. The series will continue with a 7:35 p.m. game Friday.

A Titanic expert, an adventurer, a CEO, and a father and son were killed in Titan’s implosion – Daily Press

By MARK PRATT (Associated Press)

BOSTON (AP) — A renowned Titanic expert, a world record-holding adventurer, two members of one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families and the CEO of the company leading an expedition to the world’s most famous shipwreck were killed aboard the Titan submersible when it imploded in the Atlantic Ocean sometime this week.

The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday said there were no survivors after the catastrophic implosion deep in the North Atlantic.

The search for the submersible — as well as any clues to explain what happened underwater — continued Thursday after a deep-sea robot found debris near the Titanic shipwreck. Rear Adm. John Mauger, of the First Coast Guard District, said search efforts will continue but that the prospect of finding or recovering remains was unknown.

The Titan was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, according to Canada’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center, spurring a desperate international rescue effort. Rescuers raced against the clock because it was feared the oxygen supply could run out by approximately 6 a.m. Thursday.

The expedition featuring the Titan was led by OceanGate, making its third voyage to the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank in 1912, killing all but about 700 of the roughly 2,200 passengers and crew.

A pilot and four other people were on the Titan. They were:

STOCKTON RUSH

Although his background is in aerospace and technology, Rush founded OceanGate Inc. in 2009 to provide crewed submersibles for undersea researchers and explorers, according to the company’s website. Rush was the Titan’s pilot, said company spokesperson Andrew Von Kerens.

The private company based in Washington started bringing tourists to the Titanic in 2021 as part of its effort to chronicle the slow deterioration of the wreck.

“The ocean is taking this thing, and we need to document it before it all disappears or becomes unrecognizable,” Rush told The Associated Press in 2021.

In an interview with CBS News last year, Rush defended the safety of his submersible but said nothing is without risk.

“What I worry about most are things that will stop me from being able to get to the surface — overhangs, fish nets, entanglement hazard,” he said, adding that a good pilot can avoid such perils.

Rush became the youngest jet transport rated pilot in the world at age 19 in 1981, and flew commercial jets in college, according to his company biography. He joined McDonnell Douglas Corp. in 1984 as a flight test engineer. Over the past 20 years, he oversaw the development of multiple successful IP ventures.

Greg Stone, a longtime ocean scientist and a friend of Rush, called him “a real pioneer” in the innovation of submersibles.

“Stockton was a risk-taker. He was smart. He was, he had a vision, he wanted to push things forward,” Stone said Tuesday.

HAMISH HARDING

A British businessman, Harding lived in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Action Aviation, an aircraft brokering company for which Harding served as chairman, said he was one of the mission specialists, who paid to go on the expedition.

Harding was a billionaire adventurer who held three Guinness World Records, including the longest duration at full ocean depth by a crewed vessel. In March 2021, he and ocean explorer Victor Vescovo dived to the lowest depth of the Mariana Trench. In June 2022, he went into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.

“Both the Harding family and the team at Action Aviation are very grateful for all the kind messages of concern and support from our friends and colleagues,” the company said in a statement.

Harding’s family said in a statement: ”He was one of a kind and we adored him… What he achieved in his lifetime was truly remarkable and if we can take any small consolation from this tragedy, it’s that we lost him doing what he loved.”

In a Facebook post Saturday, Harding said he was “proud” to be part of the mission.

“Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023,” he posted. “A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive (Sunday).”

Harding was “looking forward to conducting research” at the Titanic site, said Richard Garriott de Cayeux, the president of The Explorers Club, a group to which Harding belonged.

SHAHZADA AND SULEMAN DAWOOD

Father-and-son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood were members of one of Pakistan’s most prominent families. Their family had said in a statement that they were both aboard the vessel.

Their firm, Dawood Hercules Corp., based in Karachi, is involved in agriculture, petrochemicals and telecommunication infrastructure.

Shahzada Dawood also was on the board of trustees for the California-based SETI Institute that searches for extraterrestrial intelligence. The Dawoods lived in the UK, according to SETI.

Shahzada Dawood was also a member of the Global Advisory Board at the Prince’s Trust International, founded by Britain’s King Charles III to address youth unemployment.

He had degrees from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom and Philadelphia University (now Thomas Jefferson University) in the U.S.

Condolences poured in from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, government officials, friends and ordinary Pakistanis. Pakistani TV stations halted their routine broadcasts and shared the news. Salman Sufi, an adviser to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, wrote on Twitter: “Very sad and unfortunate news. Prayers for the families of deceased. Mr Dawood and family are in our prayers.”

PAUL-HENRI NARGEOLET

Nargeolet was a former French navy officer who was considered a Titanic expert after making multiple trips to the wreckage over several decades.

He was director of underwater research for E/M Group and RMS Titanic Inc., had completed 37 dives to the wreck and supervised the recovery of 5,000 artifacts, according to his company profile.

RMS Titanic, Inc., the company that owns the salvage rights to the Titanic shipwreck, mourned the longtime employee known as “PH.”

“The maritime world has lost an iconic and inspirational leader in deep-sea exploration, and we have lost a dear and treasured friend,” the company said in a statement Thursday.

Friend and former colleague Matthew Tulloch said Nargeolet loved his work from the time they first collaborated in the 1990s up until Nargeolet’s death.

“I never got the impression that he was looking forward to retirement,” Tulloch said with a small laugh. “You sort of think of people as they retire, then they can go on and do things that they love to do. This was exactly that for him — I can’t think of anything that I’m aware of that he would enjoy doing more than traveling around and sharing information and his experiences with people.”

Longtime friend and colleague Christian Pétron hailed Nargeolet as “surely one of the world’s greatest explorers of the deeps.”

Speaking Friday to broadcaster France-Info, the retired diver and underwater filmographer said he and Nargeolet had had known each other for more than 40 years after meeting in the French navy, and made repeated dives to the Titanic together.

He opined that Nargeolet was aware of the risks, but would have been powered by a thirst for further exploration of the Titanic wreck and its fauna and flora.

“There are always extraordinary things. When you descend deeper than 1,000 meters, you always find unknown things, unknown animals,” he said. “There’s always something to find on a wreck like that, which is a genuine oasis on a sandy bottom where there is absolutely nothing.”

Nargeolet was expedition leader on the most technologically advanced dive to the Titanic in 2010, which used high-resolution sonar and 3D optical imaging on the Titanic’s bow and stern sections as well as the debris field.

While with the French Institute for Research and Exploitation of Sea, he led the first recovery expedition to the Titanic in 1987.

Former Norview star Keyontae Johnson selected by Oklahoma City in the second round of NBA draft – Daily Press

0

Since middle school, Keyontae Johnson’s parents encouraged their son to set goals.

“When he was little, we made him write a goal list,” said his father, Marrecus. “And everything he wanted to do, we told him to check it off.”

One by one, Johnson checked them off.

On Thursday, Johnson checked off another goal: Becoming an NBA draft pick.

Johnson, who attended Norview High in Norfolk, was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 50th overall pick at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Johnsons celebrated the news at their Norfolk home, surrounded by family and friends.

“Everything he wanted to do, he did,” Marrecus said. “He’s checked off everything. This is the last one.”

Johnson became the third former Hampton Roads player to be chosen during the last three drafts. Mark Williams, a former star at Norfolk Academy and Duke, was the 15th overall selection of the Charlotte Hornets last season. And in 2021, Cam Thomas, a former Oscar Smith standout, was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 27th overall pick.

Marrecus and his wife, Nika, encouraged their son to put the goal list together, and he has methodically accomplished them.

Johnson went to Norview and played for a state championship. Check.

He wanted to go to a prep school and went to the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida. Check.

He wanted to attend Florida and got a scholarship. Check.

And he wanted to play in March Madness. Check, check: He played for the Gators and helped take Kansas State to the Elite Eight last season after transferring to the Wildcats.

On his way to the NBA, Johnson made national headlines.

At 6-feet-6 and 230 pounds, he was considered a first-round talent, but his life took many twists and turns.

Johnson made a miraculous comeback, returning to the court after a scary collapse during a game with Florida two years ago. He transferred to Kansas State and helped the Wildcats reach the Elite Eight.

“I wouldn’t be here without God,” Johnson said in a telephone interview earlier this year with The Pilot. “I’m just appreciative. I thank him after every practice and every game, whether good or bad. He just keeps opening doors for me to succeed in life. Everything is just working out as planned. It’s all God.”

Johnson’s comeback story has been well-documented. In a game Dec. 12, 2020, he had just dunked in transition against Florida State. After a timeout, Johnson walked back on the court but collapsed face-first. He received emergency medical attention and was taken off the floor on a stretcher and rushed to Tallahassee Memorial hospital.

Following a 10-day stay in Tallahassee and Gainesville hospitals, Johnson returned to the team in a player/coach capacity and remained in that role the last two seasons.

On March 5, 2022, he was announced as the honorary starter on Senior Day and received a standing ovation. He got the game’s opening tip-off and dribbled a couple of times before he kissed the center of the court. It marked the end of his Florida playing career.

On May 1, he entered the transfer portal. His suitors included Kansas State, Memphis, Nebraska and Western Kentucky. He chose the Wildcats because of his relationship with first-year coach Jerome Tang, a longtime Baylor assistant, who replaced the retiring Bruce Weber.

“Coach Tang was one of the coaches who really had faith in me,” Johnson said about Tang, who helped Baylor win the 2021 national title.

By returning to basketball, Johnson declined a $5 million insurance payout.

In his only season for Kansas State, Johnson was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and also was an All-Big 12 first-team selection after he averaged a team-high 17.5 points and seven rebounds. He also tied for second in assists (76) and was third in steals (37).

The honors didn’t stop there. He and teammate Markquis Nowell were named third-team All-Americans by The Associated Press and became the first duo in school history to earn the honor.

Now he’s got a chance at the NBA.

Johnson was expected to speak to the media through the Thunder after being selected.

“I wanted it to happen, now it’s here,” Marrecus said.

Nika was overwhelmed with joy as she thought about her son’s journey.

“(Thursday) morning I just kind of traveled down memory lane. I’m excited, I’m thankful,” she said. “To hear his name get called is the cherry on top. I’m excited for him. All you want is to watch your kid’s dreams come true. I’m just excited for him to be in this position.”

She’s also thankful because she knows all of this was nearly taken away.

“It’s definitely not been easy. It’s been a lot of faith. It’s been a lot of tears, but also a lot of joy,” she said. “It’s been a long road. And there’s no way we would have made it without our faith.”

“We always dreamed and talked about what the night would be like, and now it’s here. This is his chance. It’s definitely a dream come true for him to be in this position.”

Moscow court rules US journalist Evan Gershkovich must stay in jail until late August – Daily Press

0

MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court on Thursday ruled that Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich must remain in jail on espionage charges until at least late August, rejecting the American journalist’s appeal to be released.

The 31-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested in late March while on a reporting trip. A Moscow court ruled last month to keep him in custody until Aug. 30, but his lawyers had challenged the decision.

Gershkovich, wearing a black T-shirt and light blue jeans, looked tense and paced inside a glass defendant’s cage while waiting for the hearing to begin at the Moscow City Court. Then other journalists in the courtroom were asked to leave and the proceedings took place behind closed doors.

The ruling was broadcast to reporters, who watched it on two large TV screens in a separate room in the courthouse.

While waiting for the judge, Gershkovich smiled and chatted with his parents, who were present. U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy also attended.

“Evan continued to show remarkable strength and resiliency in these very difficult circumstances,” she told reporters afterward.

Tracy said she was “extremely disappointed” by the ruling, reiterating that Gershkovich was “an innocent journalist” and Russia’s charges against him were baseless.

“Such hostage diplomacy is unacceptable, and we call on the Russian Federation to release him,” she said.

The Wall Street Journal said in a statement after the hearing that Gershkovich “has been wrongfully detained for more than 12 weeks for nothing more than doing his job as a journalist,” and it again called for his immediate release.

Gershkovich and his employer have denied the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

His arrest in the city of Yekaterinburg rattled journalists in Russia, where authorities have not detailed what, if any, evidence they have to support the espionage charges.

Gershkovich is being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, which is notorious for its harsh conditions. Tracy said the U.S. Embassy was denied consular access to Gershkovich on three occasions since she last visited him in jail in April.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters the ministry is considering another visit request from the embassy.

Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips in soaring U.S.-Russian tensions over the Kremlin’s military operation in Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.

Ryabkov has cautioned, however, that the possibility of a swap in Gershkovich’s case “could only be considered after a court delivers its verdict.” Prominent lawyers who worked on espionage cases told The Associated Press that the investigation alone could take up to 18 months.

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. Daniloff was released without charge 20 days later in a swap for an employee of the Soviet Union’s U.N. mission who was arrested by the FBI, also on spying charges.

The latest on the Titan submersible tragedy and what’s next in the recovery efforts – Daily Press

0

Associated Press

The desperate search to find the missing Titan submersible turned into a recovery effort Thursday after officials announced that the vessel imploded sometime this week, killing all five aboard, near the Titanic shipwreck.

Deep-sea robots will continue to search the sea floor for clues about what happened deep in the North Atlantic. The pilot and four passengers died in the catastrophic implosion.

The Titan, owned by undersea exploration company OceanGate Expeditions, had been chronicling the Titanic’s decay and the underwater ecosystem around the sunken ocean liner in yearly voyages since 2021.

Many questions about what occurred underwater remain: Exactly when and why did the implosion occur? Will the victims’ bodies ever be found? How could this tragedy have been prevented?

Here’s what we do know so far:

WHEN AND WHERE DID THE TITAN GO MISSING?

The craft submerged Sunday morning, and its support vessel lost contact with it about an hour and 45 minutes later, according to the Coast Guard.

The vessel was reported overdue about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, according to Canada’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Titan was launched from an icebreaker that was hired by OceanGate and formerly operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The ship has ferried dozens of people and the submersible craft to the North Atlantic wreck site, where the Titan has made multiple dives.

WHAT HAPPENED ABOARD THE TITAN?

The vessel suffered a catastrophic implosion, killing all five aboard, sometime this week after it submerged Sunday morning. It’s not clear exactly when or where the implosion occurred. But a senior military official said Thursday that a U.S. Navy acoustic system detected an “anomaly” Sunday that was likely the Titan’s fatal implosion.

The Coast Guard announced that debris from the submersible had been found and the end of rescue efforts Thursday, bringing a tragic close to a saga that included an urgent around-the-clock search and a worldwide vigil for the missing vessel.

“The debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” Rear Adm. John Mauger, of the First Coast Guard District, said in a news conference Thursday.

A deep-sea robot discovered the debris, near the Titanic shipwreck, that authorities say came from the submersible.

The senior military official said that the Navy went back and analyzed its acoustic data after the Titan was reported missing. That anomaly was “consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost,” the official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive acoustic detection system.

The Navy passed on the information to the Coast Guard, which continued its search because the Navy did not consider the data to be definitive.

The Wall Street Journal on Thursday first reported the Navy’s involvement.

WHAT’S NEXT AND WHO WAS KILLED?

The Coast Guard will continue searching near the Titanic for more clues about what happened to the Titan.

Officials say there isn’t a timeframe for when they will call off the massive international search. Mauger said that the prospect of finding or recovering remains was unknown.

The victims are: Oceangate chief executive and Titan pilot Stockton Rush; two members of a prominent Pakistani family, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood; British adventurer Hamish Harding; and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans,” OceanGate said in a statement. “We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.”

Emotional Wembanyama excited for future with Spurs as overall No. 1 pick – Daily Press

0

NEW YORK — Victor Wembanyama was the presumed No. 1 pick for months, the rare certainty in an NBA draft process that’s often a guessing game.

Yet as the clock above the stage he was facing ticked all the way down to zero, butterflies set in.

“Longest five minutes of my life,” Wembanyama said.

The San Antonio Spurs are confident he will be worth the wait.

The Spurs took the 19-year-old from France who arrives with enormous expectations to become basketball’s newest sensation, triggering chants of “Wemby! Wemby” from a group of Spurs fans waving signs from the first row of seats in Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Thursday night.

Wembanyama comes with far more height and hype than most No. 1 picks. Listed at 7-foot-5, he dominated the French league in his final season there, leading all players in scoring, rebounding and blocks.

Now he makes the move to the NBA, perhaps as the best prospect since LeBron James came out of high school in 2003. Wembanyama brings a package of skills that seem perfect for the modern NBA and too vast for one player, with the size of a center and the shooting and ballhandling ability of a guard.

He teared up as he left the stage with his Spurs cap on and hugged his siblings, then joked afterward about how quickly he was handed a white-and-black No. 1 jersey with his name already on the back.

“Someone knew this was happening somehow,” he said.

Just about everyone did.

Wembanyama was the center of attention throughout the draft process and sat in the middle of the green room — for the short time he was there, anyway. He smiled for young fans who screamed “Victor!” as he walked around the arena, even encouraging one to throw him a basketball that he signed and tossed back up into the stands.

The Charlotte Hornets took Alabama freshman forward Brandon Miller with the No. 2 pick.

Scoot Henderson of the G League Ignite, whose bling-filled jacket stood in sharp contrast to Wembanyama’s solid green look, was the No. 3 pick by the Portland Trail Blazers.

It was during a two-game series between teams featuring Wembanyama and Henderson last October in Las Vegas that Wembanyama solidified himself as the main man in this draft, scoring 37 and 36 points in front of scouts and some future opponents. His highlights, such as a follow dunk of his own missed 3-pointer, became can’t-miss content for basketball fans during the past season.

Wembanyama is the Spurs’ third No. 1 pick and the first since Tim Duncan in 1997, which led to a stretch of five NBA championships through 2014 before San Antonio struggled in recent seasons.

He became the first international player drafted No. 1 without playing any college basketball since Andrea Bargnani in 2006 and ended a run of 13 straight years where a college freshman went first. Blake Griffin, a sophomore in 2010, was the last No. 1 who wasn’t a one-and-done.

Henderson was originally considered the likely No. 2 pick before Miller passed him after his outstanding season for the Crimson Tide. But the 19-year-old believes the two years he played in the NBA’s minor league has him more ready for NBA success.

“I’m the most prepared player in the draft. That’s what I say,” Henderson said. “The fact that I went there for two years just taught me so much. On the court, as well, but a lot of things off the court.”

Draft history was made with the Nos. 4 and 5 picks. Twins Amen and Ausar Thompson of Overtime Elite became the first brothers to be selected in the top 10 of the same draft, with Amen going to the Houston Rockets and Ausar following to the Detroit Pistons.

“Means a lot to my family,” Amen Thompson said. “We were going to be happy whoever went first. For us to go back-to-back, be the first twins to go back-to-back in the top five means a lot.”

Anthony Black of Arkansas was taken sixth by Orlando, ending the run of three straight players who hadn’t gone to college. But then it was right back to the international ranks when Indiana picked Bilal Coulibaly, Wembanyama’s teammate with Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92, whose stock soared in the postseason as the team reached the finals in the Pro A League.

The Pacers dealt Coulibaly’s rights to Washington for Houston forward Jarace Walker, who was taken at No. 8.

The Nos. 10 and 12 picks were also swapped, with the Dallas Mavericks taking Kentucky guard Cason Wallace and dealing his rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who had taken Duke big man Dereck Lively II.

Gradey Dick of Kansas, whose dazzling red jacket resembled Dorothy’s shoes from “The Wizard of Oz,” went to Toronto with the No. 13 pick before Jordan Hawkins of national champion UConn was taken by New Orleans to end the lottery.

There were few trades in the first round, with the Utah Jazz making all three of their picks. They took Taylor Hendricks of Central Florida at No. 9, Baylor’s Keyonte George at No. 16 and Brice Sensabaugh of Ohio State at No. 28.

The surprise of the first round was Villanova forward Cam Whitmore, projected to be a top-10 pick, falling to the Rockets at No. 20. Nick Smith Jr. of Arkansas went to Charlotte at No. 27 after being considered a lottery selection.

The NBA champion Denver Nuggets did not have a pick in the first round. The Miami Heat, who lost in the NBA Finals, took UCLA’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. at No. 18.

The ultimate patio decor guide for enjoying the outdoors in comfort – Daily Press

Personal outdoor space is a precious sanctuary in a hectic world. A patio is a place to grow a garden, entertain friends or enjoy your morning coffee in the fresh air. Whether you have room for a personal outdoor theater or a cozy space to watch the sunset, it’s possible to decorate your patio so it’s welcoming and comfortable but still functional. Transform your patio, no matter how large or small, into a personalized haven with these ideas.

Patio decorating ideas

You’ll love spending time on your patio if you keep a few design considerations in mind.

Patio layout

When thinking about how you want to use your patio, plan out how much furniture you want and how people will navigate the space. Avoid crowding your patio with excess clutter or bulky furniture, especially in walkways.

How to protect patio furniture

Consider your area’s climate while you’re shopping. To prevent fading and mildew, outdoor furniture should be stored or covered. Stackable or foldable patio furniture is not only easier to protect from the elements, but its portability can also give your patio more flexibility.

Patio storage

Clever space-saving solutions, such as storage benches or planter boxes that double as tables, can help maximize your patio space. The more you maximize your space, the more comfortable you’ll be when on your patio.

How to shade your patio

Build in shade and privacy by installing a pergola or curtains or setting up an umbrella. Alternatively, use trellises or a vertical garden to shield your space using plants.

Growing plants on your patio

Flower pots are an excellent way to customize your outdoor space. Plants can provide culinary variety and beautiful color — not to mention a habitat for insects and birds. Experiment with different planter levels and heights to divide your space or create privacy.
